A Theoretical Conversation Between Carlos Gonzalez and Charlie Manuel

Tuesday, July 13, 2010

Charlie Manuel - Umm, well hello, umm Carlos.

Carlos Gonzalez aka CarGo - Uhhh, who is this?

Charlie Manuel - Well you know its, [5 seconds of dead air], Chaaahhhllie Manuel. My team, you know, umm, lost in the World Series and umm, I guess that makes me umm the manager of umm the All Star Game.

CarGo - Oh, Mr. Manuel, so is this good news about the All Star game?

Charlie Manuel - Well, you know I had some hardish type decisions to make. Umm, they want me to pick umm the All Star team and umm well I don't remember people's names and things. So umm, I kind of picked guys umm, that were you know kind of All Stars before cause well they were all stars before so well they can be all stars again, right? I think that umm makes sense.

CarGo - Soooo, that means I didn't make the team?

Charlie Manuel - Well ya umm, I didn't really know your name, umm, there are so many people named Gonzalez and umm I just went with Adrian. And well umm, I have to pick a player on each um team so I picked some guys that umm aren't very good, they kind of suck. But they umm told me I needed an Asshole, or is it Assload?

CarGo - Astro?

Charlie Manuel - Ya Assload. So I took Jason Bourne, just in case we get into some kind of fight. And then I needed a D-Bag so I took some Young guy. My secret is ask my bat boy who has the most homers or steals on a team and then umm I take them. Oh Oh and I took that sunglasses at night guy... Love that tune.

CarGo - So, you're telling me that Chris Young, Michael Bourn and Corey Hart made the All Star team over me?

Charlie Manuel - Well yessirreee! And I took a Byrd and some guy named Infante cause he plays like two positions.

CarGo - Wow, well than thanks for the call. I guess. Guess the fact I rank top 8 in the NL in Hits, Average, Runs, RBI and HRs means nothing.

Charlie Manuel - No sirree it don't mean a nothin.

CarGo - Thanks again jackass. [click]

The Cavs Are Paying the Price For Trying to Contend in 09-10

Thursday, July 01, 2010

Last offseason the Cavs had a few options, they could either A) go for it in 09-10 and try to convince Lebron that they were doing whatever they could to get him a championship or they could have B) not so discretely told Lebron that they were going to build a roster in 09-10 that would allow him to pick from the litter of free agent buddies that he might want to bring with him to Cleveland. I wrote about this exact issue last June and stated that of the two B was vastly more important than option A. Unfortunately for Cavaliers fans, they went with option A and came up well short of an NBA title.

Let's just rewind and look at some of the decisions which are forcing the Cavs to bank on hometown loyalty and not "Opportunity to Win". Last year the Cavs biggest offseason decision was what to do with free agent Anderson Varejao. They could let him go and save the cap room or they could keep him on the roster to appease Lebron, they chose to sign him to a 6 year deal. Whoops! Varejao is on the cap for 7 million dollars, that's 7 mill for under 10 points and under 10 boards a game. That's 7 mill that could be used for say Chris Bosh.

The next thing they did was decide to trade for Shaq. This decision didn't work out for the Championship cause but it actually didn't effect them in the cap game as Shaq is completely off the books and so were the players he was packaged for. This deal is pretty much a wash.

Finally the biggest decision the Cavs made and what amounts to the biggest detriment to their cap wallets was deciding midseason to trade for Antawn Jamison. Jamison was thought to be the missing link on the 09-10 Cavs. He was thought to be the bonus that would get them to the title game. Instead he came to the squad, played significantly worse than he did in Washington, made no impact in the playoffs at all, and is now consuming 13.4 million of cap space.

Cleveland now stares blankly as multiple teams come to Akron to Woo Lebron offering him cap space to play with 1 or 2 more superstars. They can offer him the glory of playing in huge media markets and helping to assemble his own roster. The Cavs on the other hand can offer a roster that Lebron already knows isn't good enough. They had the opportunity to pair Lebron's hometown loyalty with the cap space their competition offers, unfortunately they opted to go for it for one season, a season which now looks like it might be last we ever see Lebron wearing a curvy sword on his chest.
