The AFC playoff picture could become a jumbled mess if lots and lots of losses happen. If two wins happen than its pretty simple. So let's take a look.
1) Why do the Jets have the Edge at 9-7?
The Texans and Steelers have a worse conference record so they are immediately eliminated. The Jets would have the edge over Ravens and Broncos thanks to common games. These games being Patriots, Colts, Bengals, and Raiders. The Jets would be 4-1 against those teams. The Broncos and Ravens would be 3-2 and 2-3 respectively.
2) Why do the Ravens win and get in?
Again because of the elimination of the Texans and Steelers and the clinching of the Jets it would be a 1 vs. 1 battle between the Ravens and Broncos. The Ravens beat the Broncos hence they get in.
3) Why do the Broncos need the Texans to win?
In the case of a Jet or Raven loss the Broncos will then need either a Texan win or Steelers loss. Why? The Broncos need to avoid a H2H tie-breaker with the Steelers. In that case they lose because they lost H2H. If it is a 3-way tie between them and the Steelers/Texans they get the edge again due to conference record.
4) Why do the Texans have an edge over the Steelers?
Common opponents again. In this case (Titans, Raiders, Bengals, Dolphins) with the Texans being 4-1 and Steelers being 2-3.
5) Why do the Jags get the edge at 8-8?
Their conference record would be superior.
6) What happens when their is a big clusterfuck at 8-8 and the Jaguars aren't in the picture?
I have no idea. The Texans and Steelers would be out. The Jets would be out if the Dolphins are also 8-8. The Dolphins don't have 4 common opponents with the Broncos and Ravens so it would come down probably to strength of victory. In this case I believe the Broncos would get in but I'm not too sure.
