My Issue With Some Computer Rankings

Wins should not cost you a spot in your ranking. I repeat winning football games should not drop you in the standings and yet they do.

View Exhibit A, the Colley Rankings which beautifully has a feature where you get to play God and either add wins or take wins away. The current Colley Rankings has Penn State at 4th behind Texas, Alabama and Florida. Now let's play with the rankings for a second to see what happens when we add or remove victories.

Michigan is essentially the worst team in the Big 10 this season. So what happens when we eviscerate this victory from Colley Ranked #4 Penn State's season? Well Penn State actually moves up to third in the rankings.

Ok now let's flip the switch. What would happen to Florida's ranking if they also beat Michigan this season? Well of course they drop below Penn State.

And obviously, if Florida beat Michigan instead of Penn St. than... you guessed it Penn State would be ranked higher.

I don't know whether to scream at the stupidity of all of this or scream at the fact that somehow Michigan is so bad this year that they could actually cost Penn State a spot in the National Title Game.

Numbers On Steroids: Bret Boone

Numbers on Steroids is a look at baseball players during the 90s to see if anything screams out at you. Mr. Boone was once the best power hitting second baseman in the league. How questionable was his success? Averages Say: Why the extra plateu in his mid 30s? At Bats Per Home Run Says: Lowest at Bats Per Home Runs at 37? Hmm.... Explaining It Away Yeak, this one is tough. Umm, late bloomer? He showed potential power early in his career and he just liked playing in Seattle a lot more than everywhere else? And umm, his career was kind of like a running backs in that it just all of a sudden fell off the map? Any of these convincing you? The Verdict Guy never hits more than 24 home runs in a season and then in his age 32 season he hits 37? And in SafeCo a pitchers park to boot? And he follows that up with 24, 35, 24 homer years still at SafeCo? And then he completely falls off the map in 2005 never to be heard from again? We've got a Screamer... Man Get Big Muscles In 30s. Hm...
