For those of you calling for an MLB Salary Cap this offseason and for eternity here's a quick view of the 2009 season and how much the almighty dollar determined those who were victorious.
The first chart is a simple look at teams salary. Those in blue are teams that were above .500 those in red are those that finished below .500.
The following chart shows just how many dollars each team spent per victory. The Mets, thanks to the fact that the spent a ton of money but still were terrible, led the way in dollars spent per W. Again, those in blue are teams that were above .500 those in red are those that finished below .500.
Simply put, spending money is sure fire advantage for Major League Baseball teams. The discrepancy in victories between high payroll and low payroll teams is very evident in the first chart. The Yankees won the World Series and spent over $50 million more than the next team did. Meanwhile the Marlins are a modern miracle. They spent less than 1/5th per victory than did the Mets.
