The Axe of College Corruption

Just in case your one of the few individuals who ignores all football issues until September 1st I'm here to inform you that you missed an enormous enormous impacting story on the landscape of college football in both 2006 and even until 2008 perhaps.

Oklahoma had a down year last season true, but you know they have talent and unfortunately for them they started a massive amount of freshmen last season and in addition had an injured Adrian Peterson who perhaps is, or was, the Heisman frontrunner for 2006. My buddy Joe on his site CollegeGameballs, even wrote that Oklahoma was a lock for the BCS title game. And I pretty much agreed with him. Well, unfortunately for him and myself, we might have jumped the gun.

Rhett Bomar the starting QB for the Oklahoma was just caught receiving a nice payment of $18,000 dollars this summer for "working" and a car dealership. This got Rhett the boot and when you lose your #1 QB that's certainly a kick in the groin , but its worse due to Bomar's status. Bomar was the #1 QuarterBack recruit in the nation in 2004, the #7 prospect overall in the nation. This makes the expulsion damage two tiered. First and most obvious is that when you get the #1 QB in the nation you expect him to have a prosperous rein as your starting QB and this cuts it to one season. Second and almost more importantly, when you sign the #1 recruit in the nation and your coach isn't named Pete Carroll, that's it for the time being. If you are another solid QB recruit are you going to try to compete with someone that the College is obviously almost dedicated to starting for years, or go to another school where you will be the star recruit. Also, the backup in 2004 decided to transfer to Utah so he could start instead of backing up Bomar. So basically, they have absolutely no Quarterback options, they went in the span of a day from having an uppertier QB to having no QB, basically they're screwed, sorry Bobby Stoops good luck in 2007.

This has far reaching effects past this season in addition. First Peterson showed flashes in 2005 as one of the best college RBs of all time, last year defenses keyed up on him and he got beat up and injured. Think they're not going to completely key up on him this year and throw 8 in the box everyday. With little to no hope for a title in 06 or 07, if you were Peterson would you stick around? I wouldn't I would jump ship immediately after the bowl game. Also, now Stoops need to get out there and start heavily recruiting High School QBs, well there's a problem for Stoops QBs are the first players to typically commit to schools. The top 7 QB recruits in the nation have already verbally committed to top schools, and even worse because of Bomar's potential to be a 4-year starter you won't find Oklahoma on the list of Schools Interested for any of the top ranked QBs.

Sorry Mr. Stoops, its too bad your QB has half a brain and your friendly neighboorhood car dealership doesn't mind throwing out dough to "help" your athletes. Ouch, forget the BCS and enjoy another year at the Holiday Bowl if you can even get there. I bet you folks in Texas are pretty happy. Your frown Bobby, isn't turning upside down anytime soon.

Numbers On Steroids: Bret Boone

Numbers on Steroids is a look at baseball players during the 90s to see if anything screams out at you. Mr. Boone was once the best power hitting second baseman in the league. How questionable was his success? Averages Say: Why the extra plateu in his mid 30s? At Bats Per Home Run Says: Lowest at Bats Per Home Runs at 37? Hmm.... Explaining It Away Yeak, this one is tough. Umm, late bloomer? He showed potential power early in his career and he just liked playing in Seattle a lot more than everywhere else? And umm, his career was kind of like a running backs in that it just all of a sudden fell off the map? Any of these convincing you? The Verdict Guy never hits more than 24 home runs in a season and then in his age 32 season he hits 37? And in SafeCo a pitchers park to boot? And he follows that up with 24, 35, 24 homer years still at SafeCo? And then he completely falls off the map in 2005 never to be heard from again? We've got a Screamer... Man Get Big Muscles In 30s. Hm...
