Over the next week and a half I'll be charting out the progressions of some of the Super Bowl Records. Why? Because we all want to learn.
The Receiving Yard record was set with a gold standard in Super Bowl I by Max McGee. McGee finished the game with 138 yards which still leaves him ranked 11th all time 40+ years later. His record stood for only 9 years however when Lynn Swannmade the Hall of Fame reset the record with 161 yards in Super Bowl X. Swann amazingly did so on just 4 receptions. This record was broken by Ricky Sanders (who?) in Super Bowl XXII when he had 193 total receiving yards. Hell, Sanders didn't even need the 1st, 3rd or 4th quarters as he had 168 receiving yards in the 2nd quarter alone. Alas, Sanders record was broken the next year in Super Bowl XXIII by the rightful owner of anything having to do with receiving, Jerry Rice. Rice polished off the secondary to the tune of 215 which puts him as the record holder and still the only receiver to have more than 200 yards in a Super Bowl.
