I would like to preface this article by saying that as both a Yankee fan and an owner of CC in my fantasy keeper league for 5 straight seasons, I am a huge fan of the Yankee horse. I would love for him to win the Cy Young and to pitch up to that level. With that being said CC Sabathia should not win the Cy Young this season and frankly he shouldn't even come close. Below is a table of the Top 10 AL Pitchers according to their ERA. I've included a series of useful pitching statistics and shaded the boxes Gold, Silver and Bronze according to whom finished in the top 3 of each respective statistic.
Even before delving into what the categories are or clicking on the image to expand the table so you can read it, one person blatantly stands above the rest of his competition. That pitcher is King Felix. King Felix is the most durable and reliable starting pitcher this season leading the league in Quality Starts and Innings pitched. He has also arguably been the most excellent leading the league in ERA, Ks, and finishing 2nd in Wins. His poor record is solely an indicator of his teammates ineptitude as of the ten individuals he leads the way in tough losses and losses overall. The only reason why Felix Hernandez isn't a runaway winner of the Cy Young are his teammates and the inability of elderly men to understand that Wins aren't the sole indicator of a pitcher being good.
CC Sabathia on the other hands stands out in limited categories which speak more to his reliability this season than to his excellence. CC ranks in the top 3 in Wins, Quality Starts and Innings pitched. The latter two speak towards the first. CC is the reliable ace for the Yankees. He goes to the mound pitches consistently well and is rewarded by a team with ample offensive fire power. His 20 victories speak both to his abilities on the hill and the benefits of wearing pin stripes. Sabathia excellence on the hill ranks in the top 10 most certainly but likely not in the top 3 and most certainly not greater than King Felix.
Note: If Voters are truly hung up on wins and voting for a 12-12 pitcher, Sabathia likely shouldn't even be the go to choice. Both Jon Lester and David Price are more deserving than CC based on their straight pitching statistics this season.
