BROOM
Swept by the Royals. Are you serious? This was the Royals first sweep of the Red Sox in 15 years. The fact that a fan went into Kaufman stadium with broom in hand to begin with the fact that he ended up on Sportscenter after the series ending wow.
Yanks Poor Performance
One minute saving grace for the Red Sox is that the Yanks struggled against the White Sox, although they are fighting with the White Sox as well. Mariano blew a save which we all know is a rarity, and highly disappointing when it happens, and then yesterday the Yanks left about 100 people on base in the first 4 innings with Giami striking out twice with 2 outs and runners in scoring position. The question really is what do Sox fans think is more realistic, the division or the wild card?
Record Breaking
Curt Schilling now has a place in the record books, tieing for the most extra basehits given up by an American League Pitcher in a single game. Nine doubles Curt? How'd you answer that question to the media?
Not the First
If your a Red Sox fan there's not much that can put a positive spin on getting swept by the Royals but atleast, it wasn't the Royals on series sweep of the season. The Royals in fact swept the Indians in May and the Pirates in June. So this is in fact their 3rd sweep of the season all of which have come at the intimidating Kaufman Stadium.
Some Post Game Quotes
"Who would've thought that?" Reggie Sanders said. "But this team is not as bad as it looks on paper. It really isn't."
Hmm, ok Reggie, so your roster looks bad on paper and they have a terrible record, but they're not that bad? Ok, Reggie keep telling yourself that.
"We matched up with some monsters over there with [Jonathan] Papelbon, [Josh] Beckett, [Jon] Lester and, of course, [Curt] Schilling," Sweeney said. "I don't think many people would bet on the Royals sweeping the Red Sox."
Simple Answer Mike, nobody would, not a single person. Except for maybe Biff Tannen.
Varitek
Everyone new Varitek was the true heart and soul of the Red Sox and I knew he would have an bad impact on the Sox when he was injured, however I wasn't expecting it to be so severe. I mean if you look at his offensive stats they have been pretty mediocre this season, but apparently his true necessity is for the Sox is working with the pitchers. Since his injury the Sox pitching have been significantly worse and even Papelbon looked human this week. As Bob Ryan said on the radio this morning "You don't think in the back of the pitchers heads that they are thinking, I have to pitch to Javy Lopez, he sucks." And unlike Jav Lopez, Varitek can in fact read.
Post Season Chances
Right now the Red Sox look to have the worst chances of the Yanks, Twins and White Sox. The Red Sox with injuries to Wakefield, Nixon, and Varitek are as banged up as the Yankees right now, but unlike the Yankees did not retool at the trade deadline. However, do not count the Red Sox out. First of all it's not even mid-august yet, granted they are playing like crap and just lost five in a row to the two worst teams in the American League, but dont give up yet. First of all the Twins will go down in flames if Liriano does not come back. They rode Liriano and Santana into the Wildcard chase and without Liriano they're a one gun show. As for the White Sox they have a terrific lineup but they're pitching has been far inferior to the White Sox of 2005 and they have a much harder schedule then the Red Sox down the stretch. While I'll admit, happily, that the Sox chances seem to be diminishing by the day I am not going to pronounce them dead and buried until they are fully eliminated.
