My Hometown Heroes Vote: AL

With a little encouragement from Jay Brown I've finished up the AL list, I need a nap.

14. Devil Rays
This roster is laughable, this is by far the worst squad assembled in all of major league baseball. They have 2 guys here that are more memorable on two other teams in Boggs and the CrimeDog, one guy who's only been in the league for 4 years in Crawford and two guys that are mediocre players in Huff and Hernandez. I bet you can get ten teams in the league now at minumum that could put up better than this. For instance Yankees, Rivera, Jeter, Posada, Bernie, & Matsui.

1. Carl Crawford - I give Crawford the #1 spot in this glorious squad because he's an all star and is actuall Devil Ray.
2. Wade Boggs - He's a Red Sox player first, a Yankee second and a Devil Ray last and yet he still comes up 2nd. Thats how laughable the Devil Rays are.
3. Fred McGriff - The CrimeDog is more memorable as Blue Jay, Padre and Brave.
4. Aubrey Huff - Ya, has Huff even ever made an all-star team? Kazmir is atleast a Devil Ray and has made an all-star team and he pitches lights out versus the Sox which is cool.
5. Roberto Hernandez - Ok, why not Danys Baez if your going to pick up mediocre closers. Jose Canseco was a memorable Devil Ray too right?

13. Rangers
The Rangers surprised me with how miserable their roster is, I mean Rusty Greer and Jim Sundberg? Come on.

1. Ivan Rodriguez - Um, I guess he's the greatest Ranger of all time. Don't get me wrong he's probably the best catcher of our generation but he did win a world series with another team. And the lasting image of Pudge will be when he got barrelled over in the Wild Card Series as a Marlin and heald onto the ball with his bare hand.
2. Rusty Greer - Rusty is always a solid name.
3. Nolan Ryan - Nolan Ryan was a vagabond, his last and least effective spot was in Texas. Great.
4. Jim Sundberg - A Career .248 hitter? So he won a few gold gloves, he batted .250. What about Juan Gonzalez he won two, count it, two MVP awards, so what if he took massive amounts of roids.
5. Mark Teixeira - He's been around for 3 years now, why not Michael Young he's atleast been around for a year or two longer.

12. Blue Jays
You would have figured that a team with 2 World Series titles would have brought a little more meat to the table. But nope no meat.

1. Joe Carter - Hit a game winning homer in the World Series, there you go.
2. Tony Fernandez - Ya when Tony Fernandezz is number 2, then your probably down on the list.
3. Roberto Alomar - I guess if you had to pick out one team to remember Roberto Alomar by it would probably be as a Blue Jay, but its not by much.
4. Dave Stieb - His numbers just aren't that stellar. They really aren't he had 3 very good years from 88-90.
5. Pat Hentgen - He actually did win a Cy Young but, Pat Hentgen?

11. Angels
The Angels roster is weak as well, they've got a World Series title apparently Tim Salmon was the only mentionable from that squad.

1. Rod Carew - Wow, he's more memomarable as a Twin and yet he probably is the best the Angels have to offer. That's weak.
2. Don Baylor - Won an MVP for the Angels, that certainly surpasses the accomplishments of the remainder of the reps.
3. Jim Abbott - Dude had one hand, that's impressive. Plus, he went to Michigan.
4. Tim Salmon - Um Tim Salmon is the best you got from that team? How about Percival or Erstad. Salmon, don't know if I would have picked him.
5. Chuck Finley - Chuck Finley was a Yankee killer in his prime, man did I hate him.

10. Mariners
You Can't really expect too much from the Mariners, I mean they aren't a classic team, but surprisingly they put up a much better roster than the feable one the Rangers, Jays and Angels supplied.

1. Ken Griffey Jr. - Was the best player in baseball for a decade and made a lot of random kids Mariner fans. Now they are stuck, ha poor kids.
2. Edgar Martinez - Old Man Winter could certainly hit even though his knees were more stiff than the desk your computer is sitting on.
3. Ichiro Suzuki - Ichiro has 5 consecutive years of 200+ hits, its too bad he spent so many years in Japan or he would have had a chance to push Pete Rose.
4. Jamie Moyer - Jamie Moyer throws like a 12 year old girl.
5. Jay Buhner - Jay Buhner is not I repeat not an all-time great.

9. Royals
It's the Royals did you expect phenomenal. Atleast they do have one Hall of Famer a couple Cy Youngs and plenty of All-Star game appearances.

1. George Brett - George Brett is great, the rest of the Royals are um not great.
2. Bret Saberhagen - He won two Cy Youngs in the 80s for the Royals and helped them win a World Series. Not bad.
3. Mike Sweeney - Sweeney was the only reason to attend a Royals game in the 90s, unless of course they let you swim in the waterfalls in the outfield.
4. Amos Otis - Sweet name, disappointing mini afro, he needed t blow it out.
5. Frank White - A Solid player in the 80s made 5 all star teams, but certainly not Hall of Fame quality.

8. Twins
The Twinkies bring a little muscle plus have solid representation from both of their World Series victories thus landing them in the middle of the AL pack.

1. Kirby Pickett - He was Mr. Twin, and is one of only 3 people to have 200+ hit seasons 3 consecutive years.
2. Harmon Killebrew - 8th all time in Home Runs, 5th if you get rid of the Roiders at the top of the list.
3. Kent Hrbek - A very important member of the two Twins World Series, ya the Twins won two World Series.
4. Tony Oliva - An 8-time all star and rookie of the year but he ain't got no rings.
5. Rod Carew - I put him at the top of the Angels list because their lineup stunk, he'll be at the bottom of this list even though its not so great.

7. Athletics
Where's Rollie Fingers for the A's. Come on or the Bash Brothers, they picked a bunch of guys that only played half of their careers with the A's anyway the least they could have done was pick one guy that blatantly used steroids. Basically they finish mid pack despite all being hall of famers because they don't have a single guy that was a career A.

1. Dennis Eckersley - Eckersley is the only guy here who really feels like an A. He had his best seasons there he was dominant. And when you think Eck you think him coming out of the pen in green and gold.
2. Reggie Jackson - Really I don't know why I put him second, he's more Yankee than A.
3. Rickey Henderson - Rickey played for I think every team in Major League Baseball and every Independent baseball team in the Northeast but he did have his best years with the A's and he played for them like 10 different times he probably will get activated tomorrow.
4. Jim "Catfish" Hunter - Had some great seasons with the A's but also had his second best with the Yanks.
5. Lefty Grove - 1/2 Philly A's Half Red Sox, obviously the he's tainted.

6. White Sox
Not a bad list, some quality nicknames as well, but I would have liked to see Shoeless Joe on the list. Finish #6 because the Harold Baines representation just really isn't cool.

1. Nellie Fox - Big fan of the name, I think Nellie Fox just sounds like a baseball player of the past, plus he's in the Hall and won and MVP.
2. Luke Appling - Nellie's double play combo mate, also in the Hall.
3. Minnie Minoso - Sweet name and even sweeter Nickname "El Charro Negro" or "The Black Cowboy".
4. Frank Thomas - The Big Hurt is borderline hall of fame, I think he's going to get in though.
5. Harold Baines - Um Harold Baines? A perennial DH. He did have a lot of RBIs but I can't go crazy for Harold.

5. Indians
Wow the Indians really took classic to heart. Raise your hand if you've ever seen any of these guys throw a baseball, probably didn't get any shoulder excercise did you. So basically the order is relatively arbitrary.

1. Tris Speaker - The best of these players, Speaker is a career .345 hitter and 5th all-time in hits, however he spent a lot of years with the Red Sox so maybe he doesn't deserve my vote.
2. Bob Feller - He was a career Indian which is a good starting point unlike everyone else, but he didn't win 300 games, and that is the mark of a #1.
3. Larry Doby - Broke the color barrier in the American LEague and suffered many of the same racism that Jackie went threw except without the support of the media.
4. Nap Lajoie - A Hall of Famer and a player coach for those great Cleveland Naps from 1905-1909. Should players be disqualified if they played for the team so early that they were known by a different name.
5. Earl Averill - Was the least impactful player of the 5 but holds more hitting records for the Indians than the rest, so maybe 5th is a bad spot.

4. Orioles
The Orioles have a pretty solid squad with 5 hall of famers, all 5 of them I've heard of and have atleast seen highlights of.

1. Cal Ripken Jr. - He played SS everyday for the first 16 years of my life.
2. Jim Palmer - A Career Oriole a 3 time Cy Young Winner, plus ladies love tighty whitey Palmer.
3. Brooks Robinson - One of the Best 3B of ever, plus arguably the best fielding infielder ever. He won 16 consecutive Gold Gloves, 16 that's a lot.
4. Frank Robinson - Frankie is 50/50 Red Orioles, not a true Oriole.
5. Eddie Murray - Eddie Murray simply put is a stat accumulator, plus he played a bunch of other places.

3. Tigers
4 Hall of Famers and than Alan Trammell, Trammell probably would have been better served not being the manager that lost 119 games. And it certainly isn't helping him that Leiland is currently 8 games better than every other team in the league. The Tigers finish #3 though because each of their players are solely remembered for their time with El Tigres.

1. Ty Cobb - Master Racist of baseball history.
2. Al Kaline - 3000 Hits and a member of the Tigers 68' World Series Team.
3. Hank Greenberg - The Greateast Jew in Baseball History? Hit 58 homers in one season. And had 183 RBIs one season those are some big stats.
4. Charlie Gehringer - Just shy of 3000 hits. A member of the Hall of Fame, but he's really not famous.
5. Alan Trammell - Career Tiger and a pretty good player but did manage the worst Tigers team in history.

2. Red Sox
No world in 86 years didn't stop the Red Sox from amounting the second greatest top 5 in the AL.

1. Ted Williams - Ted was the last player to hit .400, obviously, but he will be the next player to hit .400 once they unfreeze his head and clone him.
2. Roger Clemens - His best years were as a Sox pitcher, he will and should go into the Hall with a Red Sox hat on, like it or not bitter Sox fans, blame Duquette.
3. Carl Yastrzemski - "Waved that homerun fair, too bad they lost the series." Ya disregard that I'm an idiot that was Fisk.
4. Cy Young - He has a relatively famous award named after him, however he only played for the Red Sox for a single season, he did play with the Boston Americans for 7 years though. 749 Complete Games is pretty damn impressive.
5. Jim Rice - Vanilla Rice Rice baby, he seems like a nice guy on the NESN broadcasts I wonder why every in the media seemingly hated him in the 80s and have refused to vote him into the hall even though he was the dominant hitter in the AL for a few years.

1. Yankees
If you even try to argue that they are the number 1 team on this list I just might kick you straight in the groin.

1. Babe Ruth - The Greatest Player of All Time.
2. Mickey Mantle - The Most Talented Alcoholic of All Time.
3. Lou Gehrig - He got a disease named after him he was that good.
4. Joe Dimaggio - Banged Marylin Monroe.
5. Yogi Berra - Greatest Quote Machine of All Time.

Lou Holtz is the Homer / Annoyingly Delusional

As my buddy Joe and I always joke, if Notre Dame was suiting up against an all Jesus team, aka a team made up of 55 Sons of God, Lou Holtz would probably still pick Notre Dame to win by a touchdown. So of course this weekend when I'm watching Sportscenter and they have him and fellow old man Corso making predictions, Lou picks ND to beat Michigan. Not that big of a deal, Michigan is a big question mark this year, but of course than Lou says that Notre Dame will win 11 games this year. This is the same Notre Dame that lost to a service academy last year. And just when you thought the douchy homerism was going to end ESPN asks which BCS school is going to be the biggest surprise team in the country. Any guesses to whom it was? I'll give you a clue it was another team he coached. If you guessed South Carolina you would be a winner. Next up on Lou's prediction watch, the Jets win the Superbowl, NC St. wins the ACC, Arkansas dominates the SEC West, Minnesota wins the Big

Ranking the New York Jets Historical Helmets

There's no way you can't go with the Helmet they won the Super Bowl in. You just can't. Next, I really don't understand why they don't where the helmet with the Jet as their throwback uniforms. That helmet is awesome. Then I'm going with the Helmets from the 80s because it's the classic feel and the white face mask is 10 times better than the black one. And the rankings continue until you get to... The Titans Helmet. I hate everything about those Titan uniforms. The Helmets are boring and the colors are GOD awful. Navy blue and Mustard? What the hell is that. Disgusting. If they wore those unis when I was a kid I'd probably be a Giant fan, and be much happier with my life in football.
