Time to Laugh at the NHL

You might be hard pressed to find someone who feels worse about their current job today in the whole United States than Gary Bettman. Why? Well the NHL's All Star Game, which should act like a showcase for the league, was watched by well, almost no Americans at all. A whopping 474,000 households tuned into Versus last Wednesday for the 12-9 All Star Game shootout, down 76% from the 1,985,000 households in 2004, the last All Star Game played. That's pathetic.

From USA Today here's a list of programs that defeated the All Star game in ratings:

HGTV's Design on a Dime
Discovery's Myth Busters
Bravo's Top Chef
Food Network's Ace of Cakes
TV Land's Andy Griffith Show.

The Andy Griffith show not only defeated the All Star game in ratings it destroyed it, with 85% more viewers than the All Star Game. For those that don't know the Andy Griffith show last aired a new episode in 1968. Go, NHL.

Perhaps it was the Network the Game was on, Versus, who has it? Perhaps the fact they played it on a Wednesday Night against America Idol? Perhaps its just another sign that the NHL is dieing.

I was at the Piccadilly pub with the girl last saturday night, and we were watching New Hampshire vs. Providence... both of us remarked that they we haven't followed hockey in years. And I used to make sure I had every single Bruin's card when I was in grade school.

I didn't even know the all-star game was on. And who else thought of Reche Caldwell after seeing that pic of Andy Griffith?

I think the problem is that of the four major sports, hockey is the most blue collar. And when all those millionaires went on strike to demand more millions, it alienates a lot of their audience.

The NHL is having some major trouble in the TV ratings department. While MythBusters is generally one of Discovery's more highly rated shows, the All-Star Game was impossible to find. When I first looked for TV coverage a few days before, it was on Versus. I hadn't even heard of that channel until a few days before the ASG. I wasn't even aware it was the All-Star Break until early last week when maybe two of my 90 RSS feeds mentioned it. The publicity was not there, and the channel was much too obscure.

Lou Holtz is the Homer / Annoyingly Delusional

As my buddy Joe and I always joke, if Notre Dame was suiting up against an all Jesus team, aka a team made up of 55 Sons of God, Lou Holtz would probably still pick Notre Dame to win by a touchdown. So of course this weekend when I'm watching Sportscenter and they have him and fellow old man Corso making predictions, Lou picks ND to beat Michigan. Not that big of a deal, Michigan is a big question mark this year, but of course than Lou says that Notre Dame will win 11 games this year. This is the same Notre Dame that lost to a service academy last year. And just when you thought the douchy homerism was going to end ESPN asks which BCS school is going to be the biggest surprise team in the country. Any guesses to whom it was? I'll give you a clue it was another team he coached. If you guessed South Carolina you would be a winner. Next up on Lou's prediction watch, the Jets win the Superbowl, NC St. wins the ACC, Arkansas dominates the SEC West, Minnesota wins the Big...

Guest Post: Thoughts on Sabathia Signing

I asked Grutt what his thoughts were on the Sabathia signing and I thought his response pretty much nailed it. So here it is. I don’t know. Every year I get a little more disenchanted with baseball. Yea, it’s great we signed the top pitching free agent. But we were supposed to. No team was even in the ballpark of the Yankees offer yet they still needed to jump from the already ridiculous price of $140 million to $160 million to close the deal. Now I hear we are going to sign more pitchers who will also get large contracts and the position player gaps are still glaring. Each new, large contract just adds to the feeling that the Yanks are supposed to win it all. “I think we have a good chance this year.” That is a lost feeling. If they don’t win I’ll wonder why, like there has to be some other reason besides that it’s a sport you can never predict how things will work out and some years just aren’t yours to be won. If they win I will be pleasantly smug. It gets a little more...
