Draft Analysis

The draft started out with the minor league choices. I had Upton and Laroche from last year and kept both of them. And was targeting Maybin or Bailey with my pick, #9 and was able to get Maybin as Bailey went before me. On the ride by I got Gallardo who is being thought of as possibly the next Liriano. He lead all of the minors in Ks last year and was pretty unhittable, basically I'm pumped and think I have the potential of three super studs in my farm system with Laroche who could possibly make an impact this season.

I came into the draft set to draft Dice-K if he was there and probably draft Harang with my #1 pick if he wasn't. Well Dice-K went first and Sheffield fell to my pick, so I jumped on Sheffield instead of Harang because I think Sheff is going to be a beast this season. I think he's pissed off to no end and will hit atleast 35 dingers and will even get me 10 or so steals. And I was hoping Harang would be able to make it back to me in round 2 and knew Sheff had no chance of doing that. Harang got drafted a few picks before my second pick, so I missed out there, same guy later in the draft took Capuano with the pick I wanted him with, and I took Dave Bush with that pick instead.

With my second pick I took Felipe Lopez, why because I wanted to establish myself with steals. Last year Lopez and Rollins were the only guys I had that stole bases and I think Lopez will get even more green lights this year since the Nationals suck. Plus SS was dead coming into the draft with every single good one be protected. And the eventual 2B eligibility could help.

As for steals I think I will do much better in this category this season. Rollins and Lopez should combined be around 80. Cameron is 20+, I think Victorino will be 20+. Matthews is good for 10+. Sheffield and Cano should be around 10. Jose Lopez could get me a handful and then whatever scraps I get from the others. I'm thinking I should end up with somewhere between 150 and 165 which will get me around 3rd.

I went with K guys with my pitcher picks. Haren was my 3rd round pick, he could get me 180 Ks, I picked up Bush and Hill in the mid rounds both should get 160+, Igawa was my other 11th round pick he lead Japan in Ks so I'd be surprised if he doesn't have 160+ and finally I drafted Loewen who was close to a K per inning last year, and was throwing terrifically in the spring.

The one theme of this draft was that closers just fly off the board. Jorge Julio was the last guy to get drafted that definitely has a job. Guys like Dotel, Zumaya and even Otsuka went before him. So I just waited til the end and with my last pick took Salas, who is in the running for the Devil Rays job. Basically I'm hoping someone gets hurt early in the season so I can pick up a closer, else I'm gonna be screwed.

Morgan Ensberg went in the first round. I was hoping he'd fall to the 11th round. Ha.

Kouzmanoff was the guy I got with the 11th round pick I got when I traded Zimmerman. I'm hoping for similar numbers as Zimm, with the exception of steals. He made the 4th Padre on my roster, the most of any team. So I hope they have a good season.

I wish BJ Upton was 2B eligible as I would have snatched him up instead of Jose Lopez. But I laugh at the guy who picked Jorge Cantu relatively early only for him to get sent to the minors a day later.

Let the games begin.... I didn't have anyone go last night, so I'm tied for last. Ha.

Numbers On Steroids: Bret Boone

Numbers on Steroids is a look at baseball players during the 90s to see if anything screams out at you. Mr. Boone was once the best power hitting second baseman in the league. How questionable was his success? Averages Say: Why the extra plateu in his mid 30s? At Bats Per Home Run Says: Lowest at Bats Per Home Runs at 37? Hmm.... Explaining It Away Yeak, this one is tough. Umm, late bloomer? He showed potential power early in his career and he just liked playing in Seattle a lot more than everywhere else? And umm, his career was kind of like a running backs in that it just all of a sudden fell off the map? Any of these convincing you? The Verdict Guy never hits more than 24 home runs in a season and then in his age 32 season he hits 37? And in SafeCo a pitchers park to boot? And he follows that up with 24, 35, 24 homer years still at SafeCo? And then he completely falls off the map in 2005 never to be heard from again? We've got a Screamer... Man Get Big Muscles In 30s. Hm...
