You Must Be on Crack: Darko Milicic's Agent

The Candidate: Marc Cornstein, Darko Milicic's Agent

The Case: Mr. Cornstein after the recent signing of Rashard Lewis by the Magic and the corresponding lack of qualifying offer given by the Magic to Darko went off on a rant calling Otis Smith, Magic GM, a liar. He said Smith told him that Darko was a priority but he reasoned that because they signed Lewis this was obviously not the case. This was stupid enough, however according to rumor central Marc Cornstein and Darko are currently seeking a $10 million dollar contract for the 22 year old. According to rumor central the Bulls are interested in Darko however the $10 million dollar contract the agents are looking for are out of their range.

The Verdict: Mr. Cornstein you are in fact on some serious hallucinogens. First off, when a GM calls your player priority it does not mean that you are the #1 priority, that they will do anything they can to sign you. It means that they want you, but if you're going to be ridiculous then you can walk out the front door. Next 10 mill? You're client's resume includes a career best season where he put up 8 points and 5.5 boards a game. That's not good, despite the fact he's still just 22. Why would anybody with some semblance of a brain give you a $10 million dollar a year deal. Please NBA do something right and force Darko to take the contract he deserves, a rookie deal equivalent to a late lottery pick.

On point Simon, I agree with you completely. Still, to rase a more general question, why is it that people seem to be more tolerant when it comes to domestic players being overpayed (just see at the contracts some very mediocre American FAs have signed this summer)? And why is it so much worse when an international lottery pick is a bust (like Darko in this case)? I've noticed that we seem to have a bias in this respect. I think we should rip everyone who's asking too much the same way!

P.S. Thanks for the blog

This is the only signing I've posted about here, however I've posted comments on other blogs about several bad signings, mostly the ludicrous decision to give Rashard Lewis a max contract. Give Max Contracts to top 10 players not a guy who has never made an all star game. Just stupid.

Wow! If his agent is on crack I would have no clue what the Pistons are on considering they started this mess by drafting him #2 overall. But, yes this dude is on something. Well put!

On the money on the Lewis contract as well, just what I was getting at. Oh, and I guess I'll have to reconsider my earlier point, that contract is getting laughed at by everyone... Steve Francis is getting a 30 million buyout from Portland, so being overpriced is really great, I guess Lewis will get there too in a few years. Gotta love NBA.

Numbers On Steroids: Bret Boone

Numbers on Steroids is a look at baseball players during the 90s to see if anything screams out at you. Mr. Boone was once the best power hitting second baseman in the league. How questionable was his success? Averages Say: Why the extra plateu in his mid 30s? At Bats Per Home Run Says: Lowest at Bats Per Home Runs at 37? Hmm.... Explaining It Away Yeak, this one is tough. Umm, late bloomer? He showed potential power early in his career and he just liked playing in Seattle a lot more than everywhere else? And umm, his career was kind of like a running backs in that it just all of a sudden fell off the map? Any of these convincing you? The Verdict Guy never hits more than 24 home runs in a season and then in his age 32 season he hits 37? And in SafeCo a pitchers park to boot? And he follows that up with 24, 35, 24 homer years still at SafeCo? And then he completely falls off the map in 2005 never to be heard from again? We've got a Screamer... Man Get Big Muscles In 30s. Hm...
