Steve Phillips is A Contradicting Mess

Steve Phillips is on every single broadcasting entity of ESPN proclaiming that the Yankees are not going to make the playoffs and that in fact the Seattle Mariners are going to win the wildcard. His reasoning is that the Yankees are winning with hitting and that their team ERA during this 24-8 streak is still ranked only 7th in the AL and that their hitting is going to get cold again.

Lets do a quick comparison of the ERA of the Yankees starters vs. the ERA of the Mariners starters.

Chien Ming Wang 4.09 vs. Felix Hernandez 3.86: Wang has struggled mightily in the past few starts so I'll give the edge to Hernandez, but lets not give a massive edge.

Andy Pettitte 3.93 vs. Jarrod Washburn 4.30: Is anyone for a second going to take Washburn over Pettitte? No.

Roger Clemens 4.00 vs. Miguel Batista 4.13: Again its Roger Clemens vs. Miguel Batista, it's a no brainer.

Mike Mussina 4.50 vs. Jeff Weaver 5.64: Weaver has been much better of late after a horrendous start and Muss has been a bit better lately so I'll give this a push.

Philip Hughes 4.64 vs. Horacio Ramirez 7.12: One of the top prospects in all of baseball vs. a 7.12 ERA, big advantage Yankees.

So if the Yanks have a large advantage in the rotation in 3 of the 5 spots, another spot is a push, and the other spot is a marginal edge for the Mariners, that's not very impressive. So while the Mariners bullpen may be better how does that eclipse the massive advantage the Yankees have on the offensive end as well as the advantage they have in the rotation? Well of course Phillips never mentioned any of these things during any of his interviews. Instead he just made statements about how the Yanks won't sustain their pace due to their hitting being bound to fall off. Yet he doesn't mention how the Mariners don't have good starting pitching either, and that their offense is much worse. All he states about the Mariners is how good their bullpen is meanwhile not stating any specific reason as to why they are better than the Yanks.

Meanwhile in the NL he is proclaiming that everyone's pitching is bad and that offense is going to lead the way for teams in the last two months. Thus he says that the Atlanta Braves are going to out pace the Mets for the NL East and that the Colorado Rockies are going to win the wildcard. The Rockies? They do not have a single starter in their rotation who has an ERA under 4. So let me get this straight, you think that the Yankees with their superstud offense won't be able to get them to the playoffs yet the Rockies who have a good offensive is going to drag a bad rotation which includes Josh Fogg and an unknown Ubaldo Jimenez?

Steve attempt to show a little consistency or some decent reasoning other than saying the Yankees bats are going to stop scoring 8 runs a game because even when they do the Yankees still have better starting pitcher than the Mariners. Steve how about you stop being a Yankee Hater for a second and start thinking a little rationally for once?

How about the fact that Phillips said that Melky Cabrera would be a nice "fourth or fifth outfielder on most teams". Really? The guys OPS is around 800 and he has played stellar defense. Yeah, let's trade a 21 year old centerfielder for a washed up closer with arm problems. Idiot!

Its not that I like Steve Phillips or anything, and he's a moron, but trying to compare their starting rotation only using ERA and proclaiming that he's wrong is a bit disingenuous. Roger Clemens has not pitched all that much better than Miguel Bautista this year. Also, their pitchers are OLDER, and go LESS INNINGS than their Mariner counterparts, which makes the bullpen all that much more important than them. The Yankees team ERA has been solid, I dont quite understand why its been construed as bad. But the Mariners offense is also solid (9th best run production in the league) so i don't know why its been construed as bad either.

Yes the Yankees are a better team than the Mariners and yes they probably will win the wildcard, but calling Phillips a fool for this is crazy. And if you didnt know--adjusting for Coors, Colorado has one of the best pitching staffs in baseball, and in fact over the last MONTH have had a staff ERA of 3.62, 3rd best in the bigs. They probably won't win the wildcard, but just looking at their starters ERAs and saying none are under four doesn't really say anything.

Can someone also remind him that the NL East is a three-team race not a two-team race. If you are going to talk offense in the NL East, the conversation begins and ends with the Phillies. However, the Phils are outside of ESPN's neat little baseball box and get zero to very little attention.

Steve Phillips is contradicting himself in an attempt not to contradict himself. he said back in early June (why in God's name do they make the talking heads definitively say who's making the playoffs before the All-Star break????) that the Yanks were "done." At the time, the Bombers certainly looked the part, but even (maybe especially) the most dedicated Yankee-haters among us knew in the backs of their minds that the NYY roster was simply too talented to suck so much all year.

Now that it's August and it's apparent to everyone with half a brain that the Yankees most definitely will be a part of the playoff picture, he's still sticking to his guns. Whatever pseudo-rational factors he lists are mere cover for pride and stubbornness.

Be a man, Steve. Say you were wrong and you can stop making silly statements like Seattle and Colorado will make the playoffs.

That would be Steve"Rodger Cedeno" Phillips.

Agree that Steve Phillips is off, but I don't think the point about the respective strengths of the Yankee/Mariners starting rotations is a great example. Clemens, Mussina, and even Pettite have been up and down. Wang is great but Hughes is a rookie. I think the Yanks are going to make the playoffs too but I can definitely see them coming back to earth a bit in the next few weeks.

ESPN gave the phillies plenty of attention when they got they're 10,000th loss

Ha..was just watching sportscenter and Phillips reiterated that the Yanks wouldn't make the playoffs, now because of their starting rotation.

He said Clemens didn't pitch well against the red sox last week. I was at the game...Clemens had a no-hitter into the 6th...

Steve, do some research before making proclamations on national tv!

Lou Holtz is the Homer / Annoyingly Delusional

As my buddy Joe and I always joke, if Notre Dame was suiting up against an all Jesus team, aka a team made up of 55 Sons of God, Lou Holtz would probably still pick Notre Dame to win by a touchdown. So of course this weekend when I'm watching Sportscenter and they have him and fellow old man Corso making predictions, Lou picks ND to beat Michigan. Not that big of a deal, Michigan is a big question mark this year, but of course than Lou says that Notre Dame will win 11 games this year. This is the same Notre Dame that lost to a service academy last year. And just when you thought the douchy homerism was going to end ESPN asks which BCS school is going to be the biggest surprise team in the country. Any guesses to whom it was? I'll give you a clue it was another team he coached. If you guessed South Carolina you would be a winner. Next up on Lou's prediction watch, the Jets win the Superbowl, NC St. wins the ACC, Arkansas dominates the SEC West, Minnesota wins the Big

Ranking the New York Jets Historical Helmets

There's no way you can't go with the Helmet they won the Super Bowl in. You just can't. Next, I really don't understand why they don't where the helmet with the Jet as their throwback uniforms. That helmet is awesome. Then I'm going with the Helmets from the 80s because it's the classic feel and the white face mask is 10 times better than the black one. And the rankings continue until you get to... The Titans Helmet. I hate everything about those Titan uniforms. The Helmets are boring and the colors are GOD awful. Navy blue and Mustard? What the hell is that. Disgusting. If they wore those unis when I was a kid I'd probably be a Giant fan, and be much happier with my life in football.
