09-10 Champions League Preview

Tuesday, September 15, 2009

I'm in Manchester and the Champions League starts today, thus you get a brief Champions League Preview with limited knowledge.

Group A
1. Juventus
2. Bayern Munich
3. Bordeaux
4. Maccabi Haifa

Well I can't stand the French and can't identify which country Maccabi is from, so they are both out. Juventus gets the edge over Bayern based on their slow but steady return to power following their

Group B
1. Manchester United
2. Besiktas
3. CSKA Moscow
4. Vfl Wolfsburg

Manchester United wins this group with incredible ease. The 2nd spot is up for grabs, we're going with the Turkish squad simply due to the past success of other squads from Istanbul.

Group C
1. Real Madrid
2. AC Milan
3. Marseille
4. FC Zurich

Will the French side Marseille break up the Milan Madrid party? Nope.

Group D
1. Chelsea
2. Atletico Madrid
3. FC Porto
4. Apoel Nicosia

Porto and Atletico should push Chelsea some in the Group stage and force them to sweat out a position. In the end Chelsea should still win this group with Atletico narrowly edging out Porto for the 2nd spot.

Group E
1. Liverpool
2. Lyon
3. Fiorentina
4. Debrecan

Liverpool lives for the Champions League.

Group F
1. Barcelona
2. Internazionale
3. Dynamo Kiev
4. FK Rubin Kazan

Group F should provide some fireworks following the offseason move between Inter and Barca where Ibrahimovic moved from Italy to Spain and Eto moved the opposite. The rest of the group shall just be spectators in the Italian Spanish battle.

Group G
1. Sevilla FC
2. Rangers
3. VfB Stuttgart
4. Unirea Urziceni

How'd this group manage to be formed? Talk about the weakest group of the bunch. Rangers lucked out mightily and should be able to sneak through with Sevilla taking home the Group's #1 spot.

Group H
1. Arsenal
2. Olympiakos
3. Standard Liege
4. AZ Alkmaar

Arsenal lucked out as well and has a relatively easy group to push through. The remaining 3 shall battle for the final spot, but I give the edge to the Greeks.

Knockout Stage

Arsenal over Rangers
Juventus over Besiktas
Chelsea over Olympiakos
Barcelona over AC Milan
Manchester United over Bayern Munich
Real Madrid over Lyon
Internazionale over Sevilla FC
Liverpool over Atletico Madrid

Moral of the Knockout stage 1 is that the Premiership still rules and that Spain and Italy are just a few kicks behind.

Quarterfinals

Chelsea over Liverpool
ManU over Inter
Real Madrid over Juventus
Barcelona over Arsenal

Familiar faces advance in the Quarterfinals with just Real Madrid and their super spending joing in on the party being different than last year.

Semifinals

Chelsea over Manchester United
Real Madrid over Barcelona

The draw comes out Brit vs. Brit, Spaniard vs. Spaniard. Chelsea get their revenge over the Ronaldo-less ManU while Real Madrid pull off a semi-upset over rival and defending champions Barca.

Finals

Real Madrid over Chelsea

Money spent is money earned. Real Madrid went out and bought the best players in the world in an effort to once again take home the Champions League. Well it works.
